On-Design Mini-congress

Design-less materials and objects

WHEN: Thursday 8 December 19:00

What does a kitchen cupboard hinge look like in exploded view? What’s the role of chipboard in social design and what is the relationship between cleaning products and non-design? These and other topics pass review during this mini-congress.

On-Design happens as part of Vincent Knopper’s project Dependance. It aims to be an evening about materials and objects that at first sight have not been designed, such as chipboard. Several specialists will discuss the properties of these materials.

About the artist

Vincent Knopper uses cabinetmaking as a medium to propose and appropriate new applications, contexts and values. Lead by his love for standardised materials and industrial techniques, his works turn-around, reinterpret and recontextualise materials, objects and sculptures. The mutual influence of his autonomous practice and his applied work positions his practice in a grey area, while the outcome defines itself clearly.

Dependance is a branch for furniture retailers from the Kolenkitbuurt. Various pieces of furniture from the shops are displayed and sold in a presentation installation, whose form in turn is a result of conversations with the retailers. In these talks, Knopper wants to find out how they would like to be presented in the Dependance and which pieces of furniture are most eligible.
