WOW Artist in Residence and fashion designer Vita Stasiukynaite presents her new exhibition House of Leaves. The project builds on her research into the role of plants in our everyday lives and their relationship to our bodies. Vita was inspired by the biblical tale of Adam and Eve, who covered themselves upon the realisation of their nakedness, ashamed of their body. On the other hand, her new collection is meant to embrace and highlight the beauty of the human form.
The exhibition wants to be a reflection on the meaning of ‘home’, and on the environment Vita created in her WOW studio during her residency. Natural and synthetic materials are mixed in order to create an urban heaven.
Vita Stasiukynaite was born and raised in Lithuania, in the small green city of Alytus, where she developed her connection to plants and nature. She attended M.K. Ciurlonis School of Art, where she had the chance to study and try different art disciplines. At the age of 19, she moved to the Netherlands to begin her studies at the Fashion department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie.
In 2016, she was invited to present her project the Anomalies at Mediamatic Amsterdam. For this project, she began her investigation into the relationship between fashion and food, as a product of the consumerist behaviour in our society. In 2017, she participated in the project ‘Amsterdam maakt er wat van’ and presented designs she created during Amsterdam Fashion Week, raising awareness for clothes recycling.
