Dance Like A Tree

Wearable pieces and research by Morgane de Klerk

WHEN: Friday 12 August 18:00 - Sunday 18 September 18:00

Dance Like a Tree is an art project aiming to deepen our relationship with natural materials. During her residency last spring in Kamiyama, Japan, Morgane de Klerk made researched cedar wood, its aspects and sonority. Among other techniques, she experimented together with interior architect Ivo Clason and locals different ways of burning wood thanks to a Japanese traditional technique called ‘yaki sugi’. Transforming wood and transforming the body is the underlying core of Dance Like a Tree.

Next to the research, the works shown at WOW Amsterdam are wearable wood pieces that create sounds while being worn. These tree bark-like suits explore the ambiguity between movement and immobility while covering the body. The wearer becomes an abstracted form whose silhouette is hardly recognisable, the purpose of the costumes is to focus on the senses experienced and the way we perceive this type of animated objects.

Morgane de Klerk lives and works in Amsterdam. She graduated from the Jewellery Department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 2011. She showed her work at the exhibition Holland Japonism at the Tokyo Art Fair in 2014. Her work deals with social behaviour and our perception of art and the material world, with a critical eye concerning our esthetic criteria and prejudices.

Morgane will participate with a workshop during the WOW DIY Market on August 28th.

This project was made possible thanks to the support of FondsKwadraat.
