WOW presents the documentary Amsterdam, Sporen van Suiker (Amsterdam, Traces of Sugar) by Ida Does.

In the context of the Decolonizing Europe Summer School of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and of the exhibition Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner Too? by Patricia Kaersenhout, WOW presents the documentary Amsterdam, Sporen van Suiker (Amsterdam, Traces of Sugar) by Ida Does.

‘Amsterdam, Sporen van Suiker’ (2017) is a documentary by Ida Does. The Dutch Golden Age was a period in Dutch history, in which Dutch trade, science, military, and art were among the most acclaimed in the world. This documentary focuses on an underexplored side of the Dutch Golden Age: the slaveholders and merchants who were based in Amsterdam and were directly involved in the slave trade. In the documentary, two well-known Dutch public figures, Noralie Beyer and Glenn de Randamie (‘Typhoon’) look into their family histories. The documentary also features Jennifer Tosch (Black Heritage Tours) and artist Patricia Kaersenhout, who both speak about the silenced histories of the colonial past and its (material) traces in the public space of Amsterdam.
